Gov. Signs Allen Bill to Provide Death Benefits to All Children of State Troopers, Public Safety Workers

Governor Christie has signed Senator Diane Allen’s (R-Burlington) bill to provide all surviving children of deceased New Jersey State Troopers, police, firefighters and public safety officers with equal access to death benefits.

“A child of a trooper, police officer or paramedic who was unmarried at the time of death is no less deserving than any other child who has lost their parent,” Senator Allen said. “Our community banded together to support a state trooper’s young family after he tragically died in the line of duty. Passing this law is the least we can do to ensure all children of public safety workers statewide continue to receive the support they deserve.”

Allen Calls for Action on Eminent Domain Bills to Protect NJ Homeowners

Following reports that a state judge ruled on the side of an Atlantic City property owner in a years-long case, Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) called for Democrat lawmakers to post two eminent domain bills that have been re-introduced for years, but never posted for a hearing.

Senator Allen’s call for action follows a New Jersey Superior Court ruling in favor of a 69-year-old Atlantic City man in a case against the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. The Authority sought to get his family’s home condemned in order to pursue redevelopment efforts, leading to a four-year legal process. In his decision, the judge wrote that the Authority’s efforts were an abuse of eminent domain power and exceeded the agency’s authority, according to the APP.

“Media literacy education teaches students to apply critical thinking skills to evaluate how messages in the media shape our culture and society,” Senator Allen said. “The school curriculum should evolve to meet the needs of millennials everywhere. We already teach New Jersey students 21st century skills, such as cyber safety and responsible use of social media. The additional instruction proposed under this legislation is the next logical step to ensuring all students are prepared for the future.”
